Mini Fridge Sizes Explained (Cubic Feet to Cans)
What actually fits in a 1.7, 3.1 or 4.5 cubic foot mini fridge, typical dimensions for each size, and how to pick the right one for a dorm, bedroom or office.

Mini fridges are sold by cubic feet, which is hard to picture. Here’s what each common size actually holds, how big it is on the outside, and who it’s best for.
Mini fridge size chart
| Size | Typical outside size (H x W x D) | Roughly holds | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cube, 1.6 to 1.8 cu. ft. | About 20” x 18” x 19” | A 12-pack of cans plus snacks; small freezer box | Desk, bedside, office |
| Mid-size, 2.5 to 2.7 cu. ft. | About 25” to 33” x 19” x 20” | Drinks, leftovers, a few groceries | Dorm, bedroom |
| Two-door, 3.1 to 3.2 cu. ft. | About 33” to 34” x 19” x 20” | A week of groceries for one; separate freezer | Dorm, studio, office kitchen |
| Tall, 4.3 to 4.5 cu. ft. | About 33” to 34” x 20” to 22” x 21” | More groceries, often a gallon of milk | Shared dorms, apartments |
These are typical ranges. Always check the exact dimensions of the model you’re buying, plus the space you need around it for air.
How many cans fit?

A rough rule of thumb is that each cubic foot holds about 25 to 30 standard 12-ounce cans if you fill it with nothing else. Shelves, the door and the freezer take up some of that, so real-world numbers are lower:
- 1.7 cu. ft.: about 30 to 40 cans
- 3.1 cu. ft.: about 60 to 80 cans, with no freezer food
- 4.5 cu. ft.: about 90 to 110 cans
Want to store mostly drinks? A beverage fridge with wire shelves holds more cans than a mini fridge of the same size.
Will a gallon of milk fit?
Often not in smaller models. Many 3.1 cubic foot fridges only fit a gallon with a shelf removed, and some don’t fit one at all. If milk matters to you, check reviews that test it, like the ones in our best mini fridges with freezer.
Mini fridge vs compact refrigerator
The terms overlap, but “compact refrigerator” usually means 3 to 4.5 cubic feet, and “mini fridge” can mean anything from a cube to a two-door model. Under 10 cubic feet, you’ll also see “apartment-size” refrigerators, which are closer to a small full-size fridge.
How to choose

- Measure your space, including height under a desk or counter.
- Leave room to breathe. Most mini fridges need a few inches of clearance at the back and sides. Built-in or undercounter installs need a front-venting model.
- Decide if you need a real freezer. If yes, choose a two-door model.
- Check your dorm or building rules. Many colleges limit size, often to around 3 to 4 cubic feet, and wattage.
- Think about noise. In a bedroom, a quieter model makes a difference.
Quick answers
What’s the most common mini fridge size? About 3.1 to 3.2 cubic feet, especially two-door models with a separate freezer.
What size mini fridge is allowed in dorms? It varies by school. Many allow up to about 3 to 4.5 cubic feet. Check your housing rules before you buy.
Can I put a mini fridge in a cabinet? Only if it’s designed for built-in use with front venting. Freestanding models can overheat in an enclosed space.
