How We Pick and Test Products
Every recommendation on this site comes with a plain answer to one question: how do we know? Here is what goes into a guide before we publish it.
1. We start with what you actually need
Before we look at a single product, we figure out what matters for the job. For a dehumidifier that is room size and drain options. For a skillet it's weight, heat and how easy it is to clean. Those become the yardstick for every product in the guide.
2. We narrow the field
We read manufacturer specs, owner reviews and complaints, warranty terms and return policies. Owner complaints are often the most useful part: they show what goes wrong after six months, which no spec sheet will tell you.
3. We use what we can
Our reviewers use products in their own homes whenever possible, and the guide says so when they have. When a pick is based on research rather than hands-on use, we say that too. We never claim to have tested something we haven't.
4. Every pick gets a downside
No product is perfect for everyone. Each pick lists who it's good for, what bugs us about it, and who should skip it.
5. We keep guides up to date
Products change, prices move and models get discontinued. We revisit our guides regularly and show the date of the last update at the top of every page.
What we don't do
- We don't accept payment from brands for reviews or placement.
- We don't copy product descriptions from retailers.
- We don't let affiliate commissions decide which product comes first.
