One acre is about 43,560 square feet, roughly the size of a football field without the end zones. You can mow it with a self-propelled walk-behind, but expect more than an hour and a lot of walking. A riding mower or zero-turn cuts that to about half an hour.
For a 1-acre lot, a 42-inch deck is the sweet spot. It’s wide enough to finish quickly and narrow enough to fit through most garden gates.
Lawn tractor or zero-turn?

- Lawn tractors steer with a wheel, handle gentle slopes better, and can tow a cart or spreader. They’re the better choice for most first-time buyers.
- Zero-turn mowers steer with two lap bars and pivot in place. They’re faster and better around trees and beds, but take practice and are less stable on slopes.
- Battery riders skip gas, oil and air filters, and they’re much quieter. They cost more up front.

Test notes and ratings are from Bob Vila's riding mower and zero-turn mower testing, which covered more than 16 acres of mowing on slopes and rough ground. Battery range depends on grass height and terrain.
1. John Deere S130 42-Inch Lawn Tractor: Best overall
Who it’s for: Most 1- to 2-acre lots.
Bob Vila’s testers named the S130 the best riding mower overall. It reached about 5.5 mph, fast enough to mow around 2 acres an hour, with a hydrostatic transmission that lets you change speed with a pedal instead of shifting gears. The reviewer liked the comfortable, high seat and how close it cut along edges, and its 25-inch uncut turning circle means less trimming around trees. Changing the oil takes about 30 seconds.
What bugs us: It costs more than similar tractors from other brands, and it’s limited on hilly ground.
Skip it if: your yard is steep. Talk to a dealer about a tractor rated for slopes.
2. Cub Cadet XT1 LT50 Lawn Tractor: Best value
Who it’s for: Open lots where a wider deck saves time.
Bob Vila’s value pick packs a 50-inch deck and a 24 hp Kohler V-twin, plus extras you don’t always see at this price: cruise control, LED headlights, a battery indicator and a see-through fuel tank. It has 12 cutting heights and a tight 16-inch turning radius.
What bugs us: A 50-inch tractor is big. Make sure it fits in your shed or garage and through your gates.
Skip it if: you have narrow gates or a small shed.
3. Ego Power+ Z6 42-Inch Zero-Turn Mower: Best battery zero-turn
Who it’s for: People who are done with gas cans and loud engines.
Bob Vila’s reviewer used the Z6 for about a month on 2.25 acres of rolling ground and found it a real alternative to gas, with performance comparable to a 24 hp engine and much less noise. Separate electric motors drive each wheel and blade. It goes up to 7 mph, has LED headlights and 10 deck heights, and an onboard charger refills depleted batteries in about 2 hours. You can add batteries for more range.
What bugs us: It struggled a bit in overgrown crabgrass, the ride was bouncy on rough ground, and the lap bars had some play. Batteries will eventually need replacing, likely within 5 to 10 years.
Skip it if: you prefer a steering wheel. Ego sells a version with E-Steer.
4. John Deere Z370R Electric ZTrak: Lowest maintenance
Who it’s for: Owners who want the least upkeep possible.
Bob Vila tested the Z370R on a 1.5-acre lot and liked its clean cut with little clumping, comfortable high-back seat and clear status display. The battery is sealed, so you can hose the mower off. John Deere rates it for about 2 acres per charge.
What bugs us: A full recharge takes about 6 hours, and it had trouble following curved edges.
Skip it if: you need to mow, recharge and mow again the same day.
How we picked

We relied on Bob Vila’s hands-on riding mower and zero-turn testing, which included weeks of use on slopes and rough ground, then checked specs against the manufacturers. We focused on:
- Deck width for a 1-acre lot
- Comfort and controls
- Maneuverability
- Maintenance
- Gas vs battery
We haven’t tested these mowers ourselves. Read more about how we pick products.
Before you buy
- Measure your gates and storage. A 42-inch mower is wider than 42 inches once you count the wheels and discharge chute. Check the overall width in the specs.
- Walk your slopes. Most riders and zero-turns aren’t meant for steep grades. Check the manual’s slope limit.
- Buy from a dealer if you can. Setup, warranty service and parts are easier.

Quick answers
How long does it take to mow 1 acre with a riding mower? Roughly 30 to 45 minutes with a 42-inch deck, depending on obstacles and speed.
Is a 42-inch mower big enough for 1 acre? Yes. It’s the most common size for 1 to 2 acres.
