Cons
- Doesn't remove heat or fumes
- No CFM rating
An under-cabinet range hood hangs below the cabinet over your stove. It’s the most common hood in American kitchens, and in a standard kitchen you’ll want a 30-inch model to match a 30-inch range.
The most important thing isn’t the brand. It’s whether the hood can vent outside. Consumer Reports tested a recirculating hood alongside vented ones and found it “by far the worst of the bunch.” If you have a duct, or can add one, buy a ducted hood.

Specs are from manufacturer listings and Bob Vila's under-cabinet range hood roundup. CFM is the maker's rating at its highest speed; real airflow drops with long or twisty duct runs.
1. Hauslane UC-PS18SS 30-Inch Under-Cabinet Range Hood: Best overall
Good fit for: Most kitchens with an existing duct.
Bob Vila’s reviewers named this Hauslane their best overall under-cabinet hood. It moves up to 500 CFM with a dual-motor blower, has six fan speeds, an auto-off timer and LED lights you can switch between warm and cool. The real bonus for a replacement job is the duct connection: it can vent through a rectangular or round top duct, or out the back, so it fits more existing setups.
What bugs us: It can’t be converted to ductless, so you need a duct. At 500 CFM it’s above the 400 CFM level where the building code calls for make-up air, so check your local rules before you install it.
Skip it if: your kitchen has no duct to the outside.
2. Cosmo COS-QS75 30-Inch Under-Cabinet Range Hood: Best with a remote
Good fit for: People who want timer and remote controls.
Cosmo’s QS75 is rated at 500 CFM when ducted, with four fan speeds and a 7.5-inch round top vent that fits many existing ducts. The remote runs the fan, lights and an auto shut-off timer, so the fan can keep clearing the air after you leave the kitchen. It can also be set up as a ductless hood with a carbon filter kit.
What bugs us: The remote is one more thing to lose, and the round top vent is the only duct option, which limits some installs. Like the Hauslane, 500 CFM can trigger make-up air rules.
Skip it if: your duct exits through the wall behind the stove.
3. Winflo UR008C30 30-Inch Convertible Range Hood: Best convertible
Good fit for: Electric and induction cooks, and DIY installers.
The Winflo is the most flexible hood here. It can vent through two top duct options, out the back, or recirculate as a ductless hood. Bob Vila notes that one person can install it. It has three speeds with simple push buttons.
What bugs us: At about 300 CFM, it’s on the low side for a big gas range or a lot of searing and stir-frying. It’s a better match for electric and induction cooktops.
Skip it if: you cook on a high-output gas range.
4. Kobe Brillia RAX2136SQB Under-Cabinet Range Hood: Most powerful
Good fit for: Heavy cooks with a gas range and tall upper cabinets.
The Brillia moves up to 700 CFM through a 6-inch top duct, in a slim body that leaves more room under tall cabinets. It comes in 30-, 36- and 42-inch widths and uses mechanical push buttons for its three speeds, which are easy to use with greasy fingers.
What bugs us: Bob Vila’s reviewers found the high setting noticeably louder, and the tight interior makes the filters tricky to pull out. A 700 CFM hood will almost certainly need make-up air under most codes, which adds cost.
Skip it if: you don’t cook at high heat often. 700 CFM is more than most kitchens need.
5. Broan-NuTone RL6230SS Ductless Range Hood: Best ductless
Good fit for: Renters, condos and kitchens with no way to vent outside.
Broan’s RL6200 series is about as simple and affordable as hoods get, with rocker switches for the fan and light and a charcoal filter that traps some grease and odor. It comes in several widths and finishes.
What bugs us: A ductless hood only filters and recirculates the air. It doesn’t remove heat, moisture or combustion gases from a gas stove. Broan doesn’t publish a CFM rating for it. Change the charcoal filter regularly, and open a window when you cook.
Skip it if: you can vent outside at all.
How we picked

We started with Bob Vila’s hands-on under-cabinet range hood roundup, then checked every pick’s specs against the manufacturer. Consumer Reports’ range hood testing, which measures airflow, noise at a cook’s ear height and lighting, shaped what we prioritized, especially its finding that vented hoods beat recirculating ones. We focused on:
- Venting options: ducted, convertible or ductless
- CFM matched to the cooktop
- Filters: stainless baffle filters preferred
- Controls and lighting
- Install flexibility
We haven’t tested these hoods ourselves. Read more about how we pick products.
What to know before you buy

- Measure your duct. A replacement hood should use the same duct size and location as your old one, or you’ll need new ductwork.
- Size the CFM to your stove. Broan recommends at least 100 CFM per 10,000 BTU for gas cooktops; 350 to 500 CFM is often enough for electric and induction. Here’s how many CFM your range hood needs.
- Watch the 400 CFM line. The International Residential Code requires make-up air for hoods that can exhaust more than 400 CFM. Many areas adopt it, some change it. Ask your local building department.
- Match the width. A hood as wide as your cooktop, or 3 inches wider, catches more smoke.
- Mount at the right height. Most makers call for 24 to 30 inches above an electric cooktop and a bit higher over gas. Follow your hood’s manual.
Still wondering?
Is a ductless range hood worth it? Only if you truly can’t vent outside. It catches some grease and odor but doesn’t remove heat, moisture or gas combustion fumes.
How loud is a range hood? Hood noise is rated in sones. A contractor Bob Vila consulted won’t install a hood that’s louder than 5 sones. Nearly every hood is loud on high.
Can I install an under-cabinet hood myself? Swapping a hood onto an existing duct and circuit is a common DIY job. Running new ductwork or wiring is a job for a pro.
