An upright freezer stands like a fridge, with shelves and door bins, so you can see what you have instead of digging through a chest. In a garage, that convenience comes with one big requirement: it has to be built for the heat and cold.
Every pick here is garage ready, rated by its maker to work from 0°F to 110°F, and frost-free, so you’ll never have to chip ice out of it.

1. GE 17.3 Cu. Ft. Frost-Free Garage Ready Upright: Best overall
Best for: Most families who want a full-size freezer in the garage.
Bob Vila named this GE its best overall upright freezer. It’s rated for 0°F to 110°F, frost-free and Energy Star certified. Inside, two adjustable and two fixed shelves, three drawers and four door bins keep things organized, and there’s an LED light and a lockable door.
What bugs us: The door isn’t reversible, so make sure it opens the right way for your space.
Skip it if: your spot needs a left-hinged door.
2. Frigidaire 16 Cu. Ft. Frost-Free Garage Ready Upright: Best value
Best for: People who want frost-free and garage ready for less.
Bob Vila’s best bang for the buck. It’s rated for 0°F to 110°F and frost-free, with four adjustable shelves, five bins, an LED light and a door-ajar alarm, which matters more in a garage where you may not notice a door left open.
What bugs us: Some owners find the door stiff to swing, and some report losing cold air from the internal temperature control.
Skip it if: you want a lock.
3. GE 14.1 Cu. Ft. Frost-Free Garage Ready Upright: Best midsize
Best for: Smaller households and smaller garages.
This GE has the same garage rating and frost-free design in a more compact size. It adds a digital thermometer, a fast-freeze mode for big grocery runs, a key lock and an alarm for a temperature rise or an open door. It’s Energy Star certified.
What bugs us: Some owners report it runs loud.
Skip it if: it’ll sit next to a room where noise matters.
4. GE 21.3 Cu. Ft. Frost-Free Garage Ready Upright: Best large
Best for: Large families and serious bulk shoppers who still want shelves, not a chest.
At 21.3 cubic feet, this is one of the biggest home upright freezers you can buy. It’s garage ready from 0°F to 110°F, frost-free, Energy Star certified and has a temperature alarm, LED light and keyed lock.
What bugs us: It’s expensive, and some owners report weak construction.
Skip it if: you’d fill a chest freezer just as well for less money.
Also worth a look
Gladiator 17.8 Cu. Ft. (GAFZ30FDGB): Built for garages with a step-to-open door and heavy-duty casters, rated for 0°F to 110°F. Some owners report weaker build quality than its price suggests.
Frost-free or manual defrost?

Frost-free freezers warm the coils briefly from time to time to melt frost, so ice never builds up. They’re far easier to live with, especially in an upright, where frost builds fast because cold air spills out each time you open the door.
Manual defrost freezers are cheaper, use a little less energy and keep a more constant temperature, which some people prefer for long-term storage. But you’ll need to empty and defrost them every few months.
For a garage upright, we recommend frost-free.
Upright or chest?
Uprights are easier to organize and take up less floor space. Chest freezers hold more for the money, use less energy and stay cold longer in a power outage. Here’s the full chest freezer vs upright freezer comparison, or see the best chest freezers for a garage.
Common questions
Does a garage freezer need to be garage ready? In a mild climate, maybe not. Where garages drop near freezing or top 100°F, yes. Here’s what “garage ready” means.
How cold should a freezer be? 0°F or below.
Can an upright freezer go on its side when moving? It’s best to move it upright. If it was laid down, most makers recommend letting it stand for several hours before plugging it in. Check your manual.
